Featuring Dr. Marti Erickson
Wednesday October 28th, 2020
2:30 PM - 3:45 PM (CDT)
Dr. Marti Erickson will present interview on findings about the long-term effects of child maltreatment, particularly in infants and toddlers, from a longitudinal study she worked on since 1976, plus her STEEP program for breaking the inter-generational cycle of abuse.
Dr. Marti Erickson had a long career at the University of Minnesota, serving as founding director of the Children, Youth & Family Consortium and Director of the Irving B. Harris Training Programs in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health.
Building on her research on the long-term consequences of child maltreatment and attachment-based interventions for children and families at risk, Marti has written for many academic publications and speaks and consults frequently throughout the U.S. and abroad. She currently is doing ongoing work in Germany and Ireland, where the STEEP® preventive intervention program she developed with colleague Byron Egeland is used widely. In the 1990s, Marti’s work caught the attention of Vice President Al Gore, who tapped Marti to help lead his nonpartisan family policy initiative, Family Re-Union.
With a passion for bringing research-based information to general audiences, Marti also has appeared regularly on KARE-TV News (NBC) for more than 25 years. And, since 2006, Marti has hosted a weekly radio show and podcast, Mom Enough®, with her daughter, Dr. Erin Erickson. Mom Enough is available for listening or downloading at www.momenough.com. In her personal life, Marti cherishes traveling and sharing outdoor adventures with her family, including husband Ron, two adult children and their spouses, and five delightful grandchildren, ages 11 – 16.

Last year Minnesota children were safer and received more services due in large part to the loyal donors and passionate volunteers of Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota. 13,600 more children annually are getting help from county child protection agencies due to changes our passionate volunteers helped make in state law.
In addition, counties and the state increased their budgets for child protection and foster care by over $200 million since 2015. Counties also added nearly 500 caseworkers – a 60% increase. But many challenges remain for vulnerable, neglected, and abused children in Minnesota, this year and into the future, and you are their voice at the Capitol!
Our mission is to ensure that Minnesota has a child welfare system in which children are safe and reach their full potential.
Our goal is a Minnesota child protection and foster care system in that continuously improves the lives of children, as demonstrated by objective, measurable outcomes. If the system is working well, children’s outcomes will improve over time.
